Dr. Pettit is a minimalist in regards to taking vitamins, minerals, herbs and other nutritional supplements. More is not better! When used strategically, supplements can be a helpful way to support your health. Talk with your doctor about how to tailor your supplement list so that it is specific to your health and priorities. If they agree that a supplement may help you, they should provide you with a specific dose and instructions in its use and at least one quality brand.
If you do decide to take supplements, make sure you choose reputable brands with good manufacturing practices. Some short cuts to doing this are looking for the USP verification symbol (United States Pharmacopeia) which is pictured above. USP lists companies which have sought out their various certifications, and you can look at which companies have shown a dedication to quality through this process. Another option is to make sure that the company that makes a supplement you are interested in has good manufacturing practices (GMP) as deemed by some regulatory body. There isn't one single "GMP certification" list as various accredited organizations issue their own GMP certificates. You can find lists of GMP companies through Natural Products Association or NSF International
For individuals looking to support their health and that of their family via supplements, Fullscript is a trusted and secure company in operation since 2011, designed to help you access high quality supplements from reputable brands.
